COURSE OVERVIEW
Master of Arts Psychotherapy

In response to the growing need for psychotherapy, we offer a course that provides the in-depth training and therapeutic approach a professional psychotherapist requires. If you already hold a postgraduate diploma in counselling or psychotherapy, then this one-year top-up course gives you the opportunity to obtain a masters qualification by studying two research modules.

You will be introduced to the appropriate methods of research in psychotherapy and use this knowledge to form a research proposal. You will then complete a dissertation on a subject area of your choice relating to psychotherapeutic practice.

Providing a comprehensive grounding in the use of interpersonal and counselling skills, your course will also provide an advanced critical and reflexive understanding of the theory, practice and established methods of psychotherapy used in professional practice.

COURSE BENEFIT

The MA in Psychotherapy course will give you the opportunity to undertake in-depth research in an area of your interest. You’ll build on your existing knowledge and experience and gain an advanced critical and reflexive understanding of the theory, practice and established methods of psychotherapy for use in professional practice.

The course objectives and learning outcomes are as follow:

  1. Demonstrate a reflective and critical awareness of the ethical and professional problems to which psychotherapy and counselling research may give rise.
  2. Integrate and synthesise knowledge, theories and concepts from a range of disciplines in the analysis of contemporary social issues and take a critical, evidenced based view to determine ‘best practice’ in psychotherapy and related professions.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to work independently, or in groups, problem solve, generating and communicating research-based evidence that supports anti-discriminatory and best practice.
  4. Demonstrate the professional capabilities and transferable skills necessary for employment in psychotherapy and related settings and application of inter-professional concepts to the development of professional practice.

The MA ‘top-up’ consists of two core modules: Understanding Social Research and Evaluation (20 credits) and the Dissertation (40 credits). Students will be graduates of a course which is the equivalent to 120 UK Higher Education level 7 credits in the subject area, requiring a ‘top-up’ to a full master’s award.

Module: Understanding Social Research and Evaluation
 
Module Aims
This module enables students to select, devise, analyse and synthesise research and evidence-based practice findings in an inter-professional environment. Students develop an advanced understanding of selected research methods and have opportunities for acquiring appropriate research skills through study and application to their own sphere of professional practical experience.
 
Module Learning Outcomes
On completion, students will be able to:
  1. Formulate a research proposal and working hypothesis as part of designing a piece of research.
  2. Critically understand some of the epistemological and ontological issues involved in research methodology.
  3. Demonstrate a sensitive awareness of the ethical and political problems to which research may give rise.
  4. Demonstrate a critical understanding of qualitative methods and ways of assuring validity and reliability within them, thus synthesising different philosophies of interpretation of data and a clear methodological position.
Module: Dissertation
 
Module Aims
The module aims to enable students to identify an area of study that permits the development of individual knowledge, key and intellectual skills appropriate to master’s level study and to encourage further personal and/or professional development.
 
Module Learning Outcomes
On completion, students will be able to:
  1. Synthesise knowledge and understanding of the wider contexts of professional practice and in doing so demonstrate a critical understanding of local, national and global perspectives.
  2. Continue to advance the growth of valid inter-professional theory through scholarly dissemination of project findings.
  3. Provide a reflexive analysis of the role of 'self' in the research and evaluate the impact of undertaking the project on their personal, professional and academic development.
  4. Show highly developed skills in the discovery and analysis of a body of knowledge, which is either an extension of information covered in the course or a topic not previously presented as an assignment.

Assessment will be through coursework, comprising a research proposal and a dissertation.

Applicants will be graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology, and Graduate Diploma Counselling Psychology course at the College of Allied Educators. Applicants with prior learning and similar postgraduate diploma may be assessed on a case by case basis.
 
Applicants are asked to complete a research topic proposal and submit this with their application. All suitable candidates, will be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional; All applicants should satisfy the Leeds Beckett University English language requirements, IELTS 6.0 with no skill below 5.5 or an equivalent award. 
 
Depending on the nature of the research project, local processes will need to be followed regarding police checks or similar for projects with participants who are at risk adults or children.
