Jolly Phonics employs a thorough and multi-sensory approach to instruct children in reading and writing, emphasizing systematic and synthetic phonics techniques. The program encompasses 42 letter sounds, the alphabet, vowels, digraphs, diphthongs, and aligns with both the Science of Reading and the US Common Core State Standards.

Consisting of five key elements, Jolly Phonics involves learning letter sounds, mastering letter formation, blending, identifying sounds in words (segmenting), and tackling tricky words. Each letter sound is presented with a lively action, story, and song to enhance retention. Additionally, children are taught proper letter formation using various mediums such as pencils, crayons, sand, playdough, etc. Blending focuses on combining sounds to read words, while segmenting hones the skill of breaking words into sounds for spelling. Tricky words, which defy easy phonetic decoding (e.g., 'the', 'said', 'you'), are tackled through sight learning via flashcards, games, and engaging activities.

This program is characterized by its interactive, hands-on, and multisensory nature, with a specific emphasis on comprehensive discussions about teaching blending and segmenting strategies. The primary objective is to equip teachers with the skills needed to create effective lesson plans and engaging classroom activities. Participants who complete the course are well-prepared to teach Jolly Phonics or pursue roles as Phonics teachers.
